Era odată un împărat puter nic şi mare şi avea pe lângăpalaturile sale o g rădină fr umoasă, bog ată de f lori şi meşteşugitănevoie mare! Aşa g rădină nu se mai văzuse până atunci, p-acolo. Înf u n d u l g r ă d i n e i a v e a ş i u n m ă r c a r e f ă c e a m e r e d e a u r ş i , d e c â n d î l a v e a

e l, nu p ut us e s ă m ăn ân ce d in po m m er e c oa pt e, că ci , d up ă c e l e ve de a înflorind, crescând şi pârguindu-se, venea oarecine noaptea şi le fura,tocmai când erau să se coacă. Toţi paznici i din toată î mpărăţi a şi ceima i a le şi o st aş i, pe c ar e î i p us es e î mp ăr at ul s ă p ân de as că , n -a u p ut ut s ăprinză pe hoţi. În cele mai de pe ur mă, veni fiul cel mai mare al

împăratului şi-i zise:- Ta tă , a m c re sc ut î n p al a tu ri l e t al e, m -a m p li mb at p ri n a st ă

g rădină de atâtea ori şi am văzut roade foar te fr umoase în pomul dinf un du l g r ăd in ei , d ar n- am pu tu t g us ta n ic io da tă d in el e; ac um a d at î ncopt, dă-mi voie ca nopţile astea să păzesc însumi, şi mă prinz că voip u n e m â n a p e a c e l t â l h a r c a r e n e j e f u i e ş t e .

- Ta tă , a tâ ţi a a ni l -a i ţ inu t, a i s uf er it a tâ tea n ec az uri d up ă u r maacestui pom, mai lasă-l, rogu-te, şi anul acesta, să-mi încerc şi eunorocul.

N- au zi tu c e p ră pă st iis p u n f r a ţ i i t ă i ? A i c i t r e b u i e s ă f i e c e v a v r ă j i .

- Eu nu mă încumet, zise Prâslea, a prinde pe hoţi, ci zic că o încercare de voi face şi eu, nu poate să-ţi aducă nici un rău.

Împăratul se înduplecă şi mai lăsă pomul netăiat încă un an.

Sosi primăvara: pomul înf lori mai fr umos şi legă mai mult decâtaltădată. Împăratu l se veseli de fr umuseţea f lorilor şi de mulţimearoadelor sale, dară când se gândea că nici în anul acesta n-o să aibăpar te de merele lui cele aurite, se căia că la lăsat netăiat. Prâslea seducea adesea prin g rădină, da ocol măr ulu i şi tot plănui a. În sfârşitm e r e l e î n c e p u r ă a s e p â r g u i . A t u n c i f i u l c e l m a i m i c a l î m p ă r a t u l u i z i s e :

- T a t ă , i a t ă a s o s i t t i m p u l ; m ă d u c s ă p â n d e s c ş i e u .- Du-te, zise împăratul; dară neg reşit că şi tu ai să te întorci

numai că sunt mai mic, dară nici nu mă leg ca să prinz pe tâlhari, cin u m a i o c e r c a r e s ă f a c .

C um ve ni s ea ra , s e d us e, î şi l uă c ăr ţi d e c et it , d ou ă ţ e pu şe, ar cu lş i to lb a c u s ăg eţi le. Î şi a le se u n lo c de p ân dă î ntr-u n co lţ p e l ân gă p om,bătu ţe puşele în pământ şi se puse între ele, aşa cum să-i vină unul

dinainte şi altul la spate ca, daca îi va veni somn şi ar moţăi, să sel ove as că cu b arb a î n c el de d in ai nt ea l ui ş i d ac a a r da ca pu l p e s pa te, s ăs e l o v e a s c ă c u c e a f a î n c e l d e d i n a p o i .

Ni ci od ată n -a s imţ it î mp ăra tu l ma i ma re b uc uri e d ec ât c ân d a v ăz ut l am a s a s a m e r e l e d e a u r d i n c a r e n u g u s t a s e n i c i o d a t ă .- A c u m , z i s e P r â s l e a , s ă c ă u t ă m ş i p e h o ţ .D ar ă î mp ăr at ul , mu lţ um it c ă p ip ăi se m er el e c el e a ur it e, n u m ai

voia să ştie de hoţi. Fiul său însă nu se lăsa cu una cu două, ci, arătând împăratului dâra de sânge ce lăsase pe pământ rana ce făcuse hoţului, îispuse că se duse să-l caute şi să-l aducă împăratului chiar di n g aură deşar pe. Şi ch iar de a doua zi vorbi cu fraţii lui ca să meargă î mpreu nă peur ma hoţului şi să-l prinză. Fraţii săi prinseră pizmă pe el pentr u căf u s e s e m a i v r e d n i c d e c â t d â n ş i i ş i c ă u t a u p r i l e j c a s ă - l p i a r z ă ; d e a c e e a ş i

voiră bucuros să meargă. Ei se pregătiră şi porniră. Se luară, deci, dupăd âr a s ân g el ui ş i m er se, m er se, p ân ă c e i eş ir ă l a p us ti et at e, d e a co l o m aimerse oleacă până ce dete de o prăpastie, unde se şi pierdu dâra.Ocoliră împregiur ul prăpastiei şi văzură că dâra de sâng e nu mai

înainta. Atunci pricepură ei că în prăpastia aceea trebuie să locuiască

f ur ul mer el or. Da ră c um s ă s e l as e î nă un tr u? Po r un ci ră nu ma id ec ât vârteje şi funii groase, şi îndată se şi gătiră. Le aşezară, şi se lăsă fratelec e l m a r e .

- D a r ă , z i s e e l , c â n d v o i s c u t u r a f r â n g h i a , s ă m ă s c o a t e ţ i a f a r ă . Aşa şi făcură. După fratele cel mare se coborî cel mijlociu şi făcu şi elc a c e l d i n t â i , a t â t a n u m a i c ă s e l ă s ă c e v a m a i î n j o s .

- A c u m e r â n d u l m e u s ă m ă l a s î n p r ă p a s t i e , z i s e P r â s l e a , v ă z â n dc ă f r a ţ i i c e i m a r i s e c o d e s c ; c â n d v o i m i ş c a f r â n g h i a , v o i m a i m u l t s ă m ălăsaţi în jos; şi după ce veţi vedea că frânghi a nu se mai duce la val e, săp u n e ţ i p a z n i c i , s ă p ă z e a s c ă ş i , c â n d v a v e d e a c ă f r â n g h i a s e m i ş c ă d e

mai jos, şi-l lăsară, şi-l lăsară, până ce văzură că frânghia nu mai sta întinsă, cum este când are ceva atârnat de capătul ei. Atunci fraţiiţ i n u r ă s f a t ş i z i s e r ă :

- Să aşte ptăm până ce vom vedea daca face vreo izbândă, şia t u n c i o r i b i n e o r i r ă u d e v a f a c e , s ă - l p i e r d e m , c a s ă n e c u r ă ţ i m d e u n u lc a d â n s u l c a r e n e f a c e d e r u ş i n e .

- Mulţumesc lui Dumnezeu că ajunsei să mai văz om de pet ăr âmu l n os tr u . Atunci el povesti în scurt toată istoria cu merele, cum a rănit pehoţ şi cum a venit după dâra sâng elui până la g roapa pe unde s-a lăsat

în jos la ea. şi o întrebă ce fel de oameni sunt zmeii aceia şi dacă sunt voinici. Ea îi spuse apoi că fiecare din zmei şi-a ales câte una din ele şi letot sileşte să-i ia de bărbaţi, iară ele se tot împotrivesc cu fel de fel de

vorbe, cerându-le câte în lună şi în soare, şi ei se fac luntre şi punte de le

împlinesc toate voile.- Ei sunt în adevăr voinici, adăogă ea, însă cu vrerea luiDumnezeu poate îi vei bir ui. Dară până una alta ascunde-te, vai demi ne ! u nde va , s ă nu d ea z me ul p es te ti ne î n ca sa l ui , c ă e n ăb ăd ăi os ş ise face leu-paraleu. Acum e timpul când are să vină la prânz, şi areo b i c e i d e a r u n c ă b u z d u g a n u l c a l e d e u n c o n a c ş i l o v e ş t e î n u ş ă , î n m a s ăş i s e p u n e î n c u i .

N-apucă să isprăvească vorba, şi se auzi ceva că şuieră, căl oveş te î n uş ă, î n ma să , ş i b uzd ug anu l s e a ră tă ş i s e a şez ă î n cu i. Da răP r â s l e a l u ă b u z d u g a n u l , î l a z v â r l i î n a p o i m a i d e p a r t e d e c â t î l a z v â r l i s e

C â n d e r a l a p o a r t ă , î n c e p u s ă s t r i g e :- H âm! h âm! a ici mi ro as e a ca rn e de o m d e p e tă râ mu l c el al t; ş i, văzând pe fiul de împărat ce-i ieşise înainte, îi zise: Ce vânt te-a adus pea i c i , o m u l e , c a s ă - ţ i r ă m â i e o a s e l e p e a l t t ă r â m ?

- A m v e n i t c a s ă p r i n z p e f u r i i m e r e l o r d e a u r a l e t a t ă l u i m e u .- Noi suntem, îi zise zmeul; cum vrei să ne batem? În

b u z d u g a n e s ă n e l o v i m , î n s ă b i i s ă n e t ă i e m , o r i î n l u p t ă s ă n e l u p t ă m ?- B a î n l u p t ă , c ă e m a i d r e a p t ă , r ă s p u n s e P r â s l e a .

Atunci se apucară la trântă, şi se luptară şi se luptară, până cândz me ul b ăg ă p e P râ sl ea î n pă mâ nt p ân ă l a g le zn e; i ar P râ sl ea s e o pi nt i od at ă, a du s e p e z me u ş i, t râ nt in du -l , îl b ăg ă î n pă mâ nt p ân ă î n g en un ch iş i-i ş i tă ie c ap ul . Fat a, c u o ch ii p li ni de l acr ămi , î i mu lţ umi că a s căp at -ode zmeu, şi-l r ugă să-i fie milă şi de surorile ei. După ce se odi hni vreodouă zile, p or ni, d upă povaţa fetei, l a soră-sa cea mijlocie care aveap al at ur il e d e a rg in t. Ac ol o, ca ş i l a c ea m ar e, fu p ri im it c u b uc ur ie ; f at a

îl rugă să se ascunză; iar el nu voi; ci, când veni buzduganul să se aşeze în cui, pe care îl aruncase zmeul ei cale de două conace, el îl aruncămu l t m ai î nd ăr ăt , i zb in d ş i p e z me u î n c ap ; i a ră z me ul ve ni t ur bu ra t, s el u p t ă c u P r â s l e a c a ş i f r a t e - s ă u c e l m a r e , ş i r ă m a s e ş i e l m o r t . F a t a , d u p ăc e î i m u l ţ u m i , î l p o v ă ţ u i c u m s ă f a c ă c a s ă s c a p e d i n r o b i e ş i p e s o r a l o rc e a m a i m i c ă .

- Deşi e mai puter nic, zise fata, decât fraţii lui pe care i-aiomorât, dar cu ajutor ul lui Dumnezeu şi mai ales că e şi cam bolnav

din lovitura ce i-ai dat cu săg eata când a vr ut să fure merele,n ă d ă j d u i e s c c ă - i v e i v e n i d e h a c .O săptămână întreagă se desfătară împreună cu amândouă

f et el e, ş i P râ sl ea o di hn in du -s e d e o st en el il e c e î nc er ca se, p or n i ş i c ăt rezmeu l de al treilea.Văzând p alaturile de aur î n care locui a zmeul celm ic, r ăm as e c am p e g ân du ri , d ar ă, l uâ nd u- şi i ni ma î n d in ţi , i nt ră

înăuntru. Cum îl văzu, fata îl rugă ca pe Dumnezeu să o scape dez meu , ca re, zi cea , e a e o tă râ t ca , î nda tă c e s e va f ac e s ăn ăto s b in e, să osilească oricum să se însoţească cu dânsul. Abia isprăvise vorba şib u z d u g a n u l , i z b i n d î n u ş ă ş i î n m a s ă , s e p u s e î n c u i .

Prâslea întrebă ce putere are zmeul şi îi spuse că ar uncă buzdug anulca le de t re i co na ce; a tu nc i el a r un că ş i ma i d ep ar te, l ov in du -l î n pi ep t.

c o j o c u l t ă u . Atunci se învoiră să se ia la luptă dreaptă, şi se luptară şi seluptară, zi de vară până seara; iară când fu pe la nămiez, se făcurăamândoi două focuri şi aşa se băteau; un corb însă le tot da ocol,c r onc ănind . V ăzând u- l, zm e ulîizise :

- C o r b u l e , c o r b u l e ! i a s e u î n u n g h i i l e t a l e ş i p u n e p e s t e m i n e , c ă -ţ i v o i d a s t â r v u l ă s t a ţ i e .

- Co rb ul e, co rb ul e! î i z is e ş i P râ sl ea , d acă ve i p un e p es te mi nes e u , e u î ţ i v o i d a t r e i s t â r v u r i .

- U nd e dă Du mn ez eu s ă ca ză o a seme nea ti fl ă p es te mi ne! Mi -a ş s ă t u r a s ă l a ş u l î n t r e g .

- A d e v ă r g r ă i e ş t e g u r a m e a , î i r ă s p u n s e P r â s l e a .Corb ul, fără a mai întârzia, aduse î n unghiil e sale seu, puse

peste viteazul Prâslea, şi prinse mai multă putere. Către seară zisez me ul că tr e f ata de î mp ăra t, ca re p rive a l a d ân şi i cu m s e l up ta u, du pă

văietare care îi împlu inima de jale; se uită împregiur şi văzu un balaurcare se încolăcise pe un copaci şi se urca să mănânce nişte pui de

Făcu ce făcu Prâslea, găti pâinile şi car nea şi le duse la guragr oape i. Z gr ipsor oaic azise :

- Pune-te dasupra mea cu merinde cu tot şi, de câte ori oi întoarce capul, să-mi dai câte o pâine şi câte o bucată de carne.S e aş ez ară ş i p or ni ră, dâ nd u-i , d e câ te o ri c er ea , p âi ne ş i c ar ne. Câ ndera aproape, aproape să i asă deasu pra, pasărea uriaşă mai întoarsec ap ul s ă- i m ai d ea d em ân ca re ; d ar ă c ar ne a s e s fâ rş is e. A tu nc i P râ sl ea ,

fără să-şi piardă cumpătul, trase paloşul şi-şi tăie o bucată de car nemo al e d in c oa ps a p ic io ru lu i d e s us ş i o de te z gr ip so ro ai ce i. Du pă c eajunseră deasupra şi văzu că Prâslea nu putea să îmble, îi zisezgripsoroaica:

- D a c ă n u e r a b i n e l e c e m i - a i f ă c u t ş i r u g ă c i u n e a p u i l o r m e i , m a ică te mâncam. Eu am simţit că car nea care mi-ai dat în ur mă era maid ul ce d ec ât c ea de ma i î na in te, şi n -a m î ng hi ţi t-o ; r ău a i f ăcu t de mi -a idat-o.

Apoi o dete afară dintr-însa, i-o puse la loc, o unse cu scuipatd e a l s ă u , ş i s e l i p i . A t u n c i s e î m b r ă ţ i ş a r ă , î ş i m u l ţ u m i r ă u n u l a l t e i a , ş i s e



d e s p ă r ţ i r ă ; e a s e d u s e î n p r ă p a s t i a d e u n d e i e ş i s e r ă ş i P r â s l e a p l e c ă c ă t r e împărăţia tatălui său. Plecând către oraşul în care locuia părinţii şi fraţiis ăi , î mb ră ca t f ii nd în ha in e p ro as te ţ ăr ăn eş ti , î nt âl ni n iş te d r um eţ i ş iaf lă de la dânşii că fraţii lui au luat de soţii pe fetele care le-a trimis el,după cum l e hotărâse însuşi, c ă părinţii lui erau foar te mâhniţi dep i e i r e a f i u l u i l o r c e l u i m a i m i c , c ă f a t a c e a m i c ă e î m b r ă c a t ă î n n e g r u ş i - ljeleşte şi că nu voieşte a se mărita nici în r uptul capului, măcar că ap eţ it -o ma i mu lţ i f ii d e î mp ăr at ; că a cu m, î n c el e d in u r mă , fr aţ ii l ui i -aa d u s u n g i n e r e p r e a f r u m o s ş i c ă o s i l e s c c u t o ţ i i s ă - l i a ş i c ă n u s e ş t i e d e

fata a zis împăratului că, dacă voieşte să o mărite cu tânăr ul care i-laduseră, să por uncească a-i face şi a-i aduce la odoare o furcă cuc ai er ul ş i fu su l c u to tu l d e a ur ş i s ă to arc ă s in gu ră , f ii nd că a şa î i f ăc us e ş iz m e u l ş i a s t a î l p l ă c e a m u l t .

Mai af lă că împăratul chemase pe starostea de argintari şi-ip or u n ci se z ic ân du -i : " Ia tă , d e a zi î n t re i s ăp tă mâ ni s ă- mi d ai g a ta f ur cac ar e o ce re f at a m ea c ea m ic ă; că d e u nd e nu , u nd e- ţi s ta u p ic io ar el e, îţ i

va sta şi capul"; şi bietul argintar se întoarse acasă trist şi plângând.

Atunci Prâslea se duse de se băgă ucenic la argintar. Prâslea, tot văzândpe stăpânu-său văitându-se fiindcă nu izbutise a face furca dupăp o r u n c e a l ă , î i z i s e :

- Stăpâne, te văz trist că nu poţi să faci furca ce ţi-a por uncit împăratul, iată, mai sunt trei zile până să se împlinească sorocul ce ţi-ad a t ; l a s ă - m ă p e m i n e s ă o f a c .

Argintarul îl goni, zicându-i:- A tâ ţi m eş te ri m ar i n -a u p ut ut s ă o f ac ă, ş i t oc ma i u n t re nţ er os

c a t i n e s ă o f a c ă ?- Dac ă nu -ţ i vo i d a f ur ca d e a zi î n t re i z il e, ră sp un se P râ sl ea , s ă-

m i f a c i c e v e i v o i . Atunci se învoiră a-i da o odaie să lucreze numai Prâslea singur,

ş i p e f i e c a r e n o a p t e s ă - i d e a c â t e o t r ă i s t u ţ ă d e a l u n e ş i c â t e u n p a h a r d e vin bun. Argintarul îi ducea grija, fiindcă, ascultând pe la uşe, n-auzeaa lt de câ t cu m sp ărg ea l a a lu ne p e n ic ova lă ! Ia ră câ nd f u a tr ei a z i, e l i eş i

dis-de-dimineaţă din odaie cu furca pe tavă, pe care o scosese dinm ăr u l z me ul ui , c e e ra l a d ân su l, ş i o d et e a rg in ta r ul ui c a s ă o d uc ă f et ei împăratului.

Argintarul nu mai putea de bucurie, şi-i făcu un rând de haine;i ar p e l a n ăm ie z, c ân d ve ni se s l uj it or ii î mp ăr at ul ui c a s ă- l c he le l a p al at ,el se duse şi îi dete furca care torcea singură. Argintarul, ca şi de-lalt rând, se întoarse acasă trist; despreţui ca şi întâia oară pe Prâslea, care îl întrebase şi de astă dată; iară daca se

înţeleseră la cuvinte, se învoiră şi lucrul se şi săvârşi cu bine. Când văzua rg in ta r ul c lo şc a c lo nc ăn in d ş i p ui i p iu in d, c u t ot ul ş i c u t ot ul d e a ur ş iciugulind mei tot de aur, înţelese că trebuie să fie lucr u măiestr u.

Argintarul luă cloşca, o duse la împăratul, iară împăratul, după ce sem i n u n ă î n d e s t u l d e f r u m u s e ţ e a ş i g i n g ă ş i a l o r , o d u s e f e t e i ş i - i z i s e :

- I a t ă , ţ i s - a u î m p l i n i t t o a t e v o i l e ; a c u m , f a t a m e a , s ă t e g ă t e ş t i d enuntă.

- Tată, îi mai zise fata, cine a făcut aste două lucr uri trebuie să

a ib ă ş i mă ru l d e a ur a l z meu lu i; p or un ce şte, r og u-t e, a rg in ta ru lu i s ăa d u c ă p e m e ş t e r u l c a r e l e - a f ă c u t .Primind por unca asta, argintar ul se înfăţişă împăratului
