FOREWORD
The 5lh International Conference on Technical Informatics - CONTI' 2002- has become afe-cognized event not only in the academic community but also in the domestic andforeign community of IT industry.
The establishment of two new specializations - Automation and Computer Engineeringwithin the Technical University of Timisoara (now, the "PoJitehnica" University ofTimisoara), 30 years ago, was in fact a milestone in the after\vards development of theRomanian IT industry. Numerous generations of engineers which graduated from theFaculty of Automation and Computers, have significantly contributed with their expertiseand turned Timisoara into the strongest IT industry center of Romania.
A few years after the establishment· in 1920 - of the Technical School in Timisoara(now, the "Politehnica" University of Timisoara), King Ferdinand memorably asserted:"It isn't the walls that give shape to a school, it's the spirit which lives in it". AJthoughthis assertion was made years ago it still reflects the spirit which dominates the Faculty ofAutomation and Computers, its openness to everything that is new in the extremelydynamic field of computer science. Under tlh:SC circumstances, the 5th InternationalConference on Technical Informatics - CONTI' 2002- is, without any doubt, an importantevent which spotlights everything that animates the scientific life of the Faculty ofAutomation and Computers.
Over the years the Faculty of Automation l:lnd Computers has developed a solidpartnership with the IT companies from Timisoara which manifested itself on all levels,scientific as well as professional, so that the faculty enjoyed a constant and substantialsupport from its partners. Their involvement is a good reflection of the link the facultyhas with the ever changing and progressing world of computers, while CONTI' 2002,trJough lts exhibiting manifestations, is a good reflection of this reality.
