pe cunoaştere”

Domeniul major de intervenţie: 1.5 „Programe doctorale şi postdoctorale în sprijinul cercetării”

Titlul proiectului: „Studii doctorale moderne: internaţionalizare şi interdisciplinaritate”

Career perspectives Europe | Summer School 2012

CONCEPT

Aim:

Help doctoral candidates pursue the (international) career they are aiming for. The event is organized

under the Working Package 4, Activity 2 Stimulating cooperation in research and is the first of the two

that will be organized during the implementation of project POSDRU/107/1.5/S/76841.

Specific Objectives:

Doctoral Candidates in their second or third year are given the possibility to develop their ideas

concerning their next career steps after having concluded their PhD project, reflect on strengths and

skills they have acquired during their research training and assess how these can be transferred to other

areas including the job market outside academia. Information on the European job market and research

area as well as EU policies on these topics will be provided (e.g. FP7, Marie Curie actions, Erasmus

Mundus). This will give an overview on the possibilities within the EU and enhance the mobility of young

researchers.

The focus of the summer school lies on training activities. Participants will receive practical tips and

have the opportunity to develop their skills in job application procedures. Interactions of participants

from at least three European countries and various disciplines will give diversified views on many of the

above mentioned issues and raise awareness of intercultural and interdisciplinary differences; thus

prepare them for an international job or/and research environment. Additionally an open and friendly

setting provides many opportunities for networking activities.

Activities:

Throughout the week different activities will prepare the doctoral candidates for their career. These

activities will consist on the one hand of input lectures. On the other hand workshops in small groups

provide thought-impulses concerning the own career wishes and help figure out where this career path

should lie. Trainings addressing job applications, the dealing with assessment centres and proposal

writing will enhance skills necessary for the job market in- and outside academia. In all the above

mentioned activities experts and trainers specialised in these subjects will support the doctoral

candidates.

At the end of the week there will be a panel discussion with experts, researchers and representatives of

the participating universities and industry, talking about their experiences with doing research inside

and outside academia as well as other career paths. Doctoral candidates can discuss and learn about

possible career paths and profit from the experiences of these experts.

Methodology:

Every participating partner university has to establish its own selection procedure. The target group is

characterized by: a good knowledge of English and one year till completion of their PhD studies. The

group shall be interdisciplinary and gender-balanced.

Expected outputs

Participants are informed and aware of career opportunities within and outside the academia.

Participants are informed and trained in job application procedures.

Network of PhD students from three EU countries.

There may be outdoor activities. Please inform your doctoral candidates to bring appropriate clothing (firm footwear).

For some activities we may need laptops. It would be great if every participating institution could bring one or two laptops.

Experts will be given an active part in the workshops.
