    CONCRETE DAM EVOLUTION

    Predecessors of modern dams are masonrydams dating back more than 2000 years.Upstream and downstream faces have been

    formed by dressed masonry and the main body comprises rubble masonry bedded inlime mortar;

    With the advent of Portland cement theconcrete dam has largely replaced the

    masonry dam.

    Along the years the concrete dam hasdeveloped into a number of specific types such as the buttress and the doublecurvature arch.

    The use of earth moving plant has firmlyestablished roller compaction as thefrequently preferred method for massconcrete construction.

    In gravity structures the water thrust fromupstream is resisted through slidingresistance at the base.

    The earliest dams, and even today thesimplest dams, are homogeneous earthembankments:That is, the material used for the constructionremains essentially constant throughout.

    The inevitable development was the zoneddam.

    In the case of the zoned earthfill or rockfill dam,materials are selected and used for their specificproperties and in proportions guided by local siteavailability.

    The next great change came with theincreased compaction effected by vibratoryrollers that permitted the construction of

    faced rockfill dams.In such dams, the principal body is composedentirely of rockfill, and the waterproof membraneis placed on the sloping upstream face. Modernfacings tend to be of reinforced concrete or asphalt
