RER/9/093    Strengthening Radiological Protection of Patients and Medical Exposure Control

Summary Information

Objectives:

Member States in the region to gain acquired capability and documented optimization of patient protection to ensure that patients, family members and patient comforters are protected in accordance with international radiation safety standards. Participating countries should have: documented reduction of unnecessary radiation exposure in imaging procedures (radiology and nuclear medicine), avoidance of radiation injuries in X-ray interventional procedures and avoidance of accidental exposure in therapeutic procedures. However, it is recognized that this is a long-term objective with little likelihood of it being achieved within one or two technical cooperation (TC) cycles. Hence a more pragmatic graduated approach is to be followed: (i) introduction of pilot projects in a small number of hospitals in each country; (ii) expansion from the pilot projects to a larger number of hospitals; and finally (iii) expansion to full national coverage. Note: Participating countries should have an adequate and sustainable national infrastructure for radiological protection of patients and protection in medical exposures in accordance with international standards (BSS) and the guidance of Radiological Protection for Medical Exposure to Ionizing Radiation (RS-G-1.5).
