CUVNT NAINTE

Nu trece doar cu privirea lucrurile importante din viaa ta

pentru ca mai apoi s regrei. Noi

Lucrarea intitulat Raze de lumin n cultura ordean interbelic este o lucrare a unui colectiv format din cadre didactice i elevi de la Liceul Teoretic Aurel Lazr din Oradea. Baza lucrrii o reprezint documentele arhivistice din Oradea i Cluj Napoca dar i alte lucrri generale sau de specialitate care au fost studiate de elevii i profesorii autori ai acestei lucrri, n intervalul septembrie 2008-octombrie 2009. Lucrarea face parte dintr-un proiect aprobat de Primria Municipiului Oradea creia, pe aceast cale, i mulumim, proiect derulat n intervalul 5 mai - 5 noiembrie 2009 i intitulat Interferene culturale naionale i europene n Nord-Vestul Romniei, coordonat de prof. drd. Livia Ghiurcua. Privind n urm i analiznd ntreaga activitate depus de noi, cei care am ndrznit se ne aplecm chiar i pentru un moment asupra activitii unor personaliti, societi, organizaii cu importan n activitatea cultural a urbei noastre, nelegem c cuvintele par parc mult prea srace i sterile atunci cnd este vorba de cei care s-au jertfit pe altarul rii pentru a lsa naiei romne o impresionant activitate cultural cu implicaii naionale i europene. Practica efectuat la Arhivele Naionale-Direcia Judeean Bihor, Arhivele Naionale-Direcia Judeean Cluj, Biblioteca Gheorghe incai din Oradea sau Biblioteca Central Universitar din Cluj, ne-a apropiat mai mult de cei care au neles importana aciunilor culturale romneti pentru meninerea i dezvoltarea naiunii romne, n acest col de Rai pe care vremurile trecute l-au pus la ncercri de neimaginat. Atunci cnd poate nimeni nu se mai atepta la o minune, un

miracol, acesta a venit i pe aceste meleaguri vestice ale teritoriului romnesc; n anul 1918 ne-am unit toate eforturile i am realizat ceea ce se numete n istorie: Romnia Mare. Au fost studiate att lucrri edite, ct i inedite, legate de tematica abordat, ns, cea mai mare parte a informaiilor a fost culeas din fondurile arhivistice: fond Academia de Drept din Oradea, fond ASTRA-desprmntul Bihor, fond Episcopia Ortodox Oradea, fond Universitatea Regele Ferdinand I-Academia de Drept din Oradea i din publicaia Gazeta de Vest, perioada 1930-1934. Astzi, cnd se mplinesc 90 de ani de nvmnt romnesc pe aceste meleaguri, noi, profesorii i elevii Liceului Teoretic Aurel Lazr din Oradea, ne plecm frunile n faa celor care au contribuit ntr-o mai mare sau mai mic msur la meninerea identitii noastre. Lucrarea de fa i-a propus (i probabil a i realizat aceste lucruri) s surprind, pe de o parte, activitatea unor emineni profesori universitari ai Academiei de Drept Regele Carol al II-lea (1780-1934) iar, pe de alt parte, importana unor organisme cu caracter cultural n care, ntr-o form sau alta, i gsim prezeni pe unii dintre acetia ca activnd n folosul cultural, social i politic la dezvoltarea culturii i civilizaiei romneti.

Cartea vine n completarea lucrrii d-nei prof.drd. Livia Ghiurcua, Rolul politic i cultural al lui George Sofronie la Oradea. Aspecte ale vieii culturale ordene 1926-1934, aprut la Editura Primus, Oradea, n mai 2009, lucrare care trateaz activitatea profesorului i a primarului George/Gheorghe Sofronie, dar i rolul Casei Naionale Bihor, relaiile acestei instituii cu alte instituii precum: Reuniunea Cele Trei Criuri, Liga Antirevizionist i ASTRA-desprmntul Bihor. De aceea, lucrurile care au fost deja tratate, n lucrarea amintit, nu vor mai face obiectul prezentei lucrri.

Cartea a fost structurat n dou mari pri care, la rndul lor, au fost structurate pe mai multe capitole, i anume: Rolul lui Constantin Petrescu-Ercea la Oradea; Profesorul

Tiberiu Mooiu; George Sofronie vzut de contemporani; ; Profesorul Lazr Iacob; Profesorul George/Gheorghe Strat, - parte care se refer la unii profesori ai Academiei de Drept Regele Carol al II-lea; Reuniunea Femeilor Romne i ASTRA-Oradea cea de-a doua parte. Capitolele respective ncearc s surprind ct mai fidel rolul didactic, pedagogic, social, politic etc. pe care aceste personaliti i instituii culturale l-au jucat n perioada interbelic la Oradea, n beneficiul locuitorilor acestui ora cu implicaii majore la nivel judeean, naional i european.

Primul capitol al lucrrii, Rolul lui Constantin Petrescu-Ercea la Oradea, scoate n eviden, pe de o parte, activitatea didactic i tiinific a acestui profesor i pe de alt parte, contribuia sa ca decan al Academiei de Drept din Oradea (1930-1934), ultimul dintre decanii acestei instituii, deoarece ea va fi contopit cu facultatea similar de la Cluj, n anul 1934. Profesor de Drept comercial, Constantin Petrescu-Ercea,

a fost i om politic, deputat din partea Partidului Liberal-gruparea Duca, i om al condeiului, sensibil, impresionat n anii tinereii de Paris, ora asupra cruia a insistat ntr-una dintre conferinele sale intitulat Nostalgia tinereii, inut la Universitatea Cluj-Sibiu n anul 1944. Bun diplomat, a tiut de cele mai multe ori s rezolve problemele cu care s-a confruntat. Una dintre acestea a fost problema subordonrii Academiei de Drept din Oradea Universitii din Bucureti i, ulterior, ntregii dispute aprute n jurul contopirii acestei instituii ordene cu Universitatea Regele Ferdinand I din Cluj.

n capitolul dedicat lui Tiberiu Mooiu, s-a pus accent pe activitatea didactic i tiinific a acestuia, dar i pe latura politic. La fel ca i George Sofronie, Tiberiu Mooiu a fost i primar al oraului Oradea i guvernator al BNR. Fiul fostului

general Traian Mooiu, Tiberiu a ncercat s urmeze ct mai fidel linia politic a tatlui su, fcnd parte din acelai partid politic Partidul Liberal, gruparea I.G. Ghica. Pasiunea pentru istorie i-a pus amprenta i asupra specializrii sale n Dreptul roman. n acest sens, o contribuie a avut-o tatl su, general n armata romn, lupttor pentru aprarea idealurilor naionale i a graniei de vest n plin Conferin de la Paris (1919-1920). Data de 20 aprilie 1919 va aduce permanent n memoria societii ordene eforturile tatlui su, gen. Traian Mooiu, pentru aprarea Romniei Mari.

Capitolul intitulat, George Sofronie vzut de contemporani, completeaz cartea dedicat acestui om n luna mai 2009. El surprinde, cu precdere, ideile profesorului G. Sofronie cuprinse n diferite conferine i lucrri publicate i care, n general, sunt axate pe probleme de Drept internaional. Pan-european, George Sofronie s-a bucurat de stim i respect n rndul contemporanilor. Gazeta de Vest a acordat o atenie deosebit acestui profesor i a ncercat ntotdeauna s publice, n mod ct mai realist, articole despre activitatea sa tiinific, fiindu-i alturi n numeroase rnduri, inclusiv atunci cnd s-a confruntat cu probleme majore de ordin familial (mpucarea soiei sale). Ca politician, preedinte al Comisiei Interimare din Oradea, a fost nevoit s aplice i msuri radicale ns, dincolo de unele interpretri mai rutciaose, prof. George Sofronie a rmas o personalitate respectat i apreciat de contemporani. A fost maleabil i cu cei care au ncercat s-i denigreze etnia i religia, lund aceste speculaii ca simple cuvinte spuse de oameni care nu nelegeau, sau nu doreau s neleag, de ce sunt necesare unele msuri luate, mai ales, n calitate de primar.

Capitolul care face referire la activitatea prof. Lazr Iacob surprinde activitatea sa didactic, tiinific i pedagogic, dar i contribuia pe care a avut-o timp de un an n

calitate de preedinte al Casei Naionale. La fel ca i ali profesori ai Academiei de Drept din Oradea, Lazr Iacob, profesor de Drept Bisericesc, a fost una dintre cele mai

apreciate personaliti ale instituiei, att n snul acesteia, ct i al societii ordene. Fost decan i prodecan al Academiei de Drept, reprezentant n Senatul Universitii de la Bucureti, alturi de Constantin Petrescu-Ercea, director al Cminului i Cantinei Studenilor n Drept din Oradea, prof. Lazr Iacob a fost decorat, ca i ali profesori ai instituiei, (Constantin Petrescu-Ercea sau George Strat) de statul romn. n capitolul despre prof. George/Gheorghe Strat, s-a ncercat evidenierea celor mai importante aspecte legate de activitatea didactic i tiinific desfurat de acesta la Academia de Drept din Oradea. Profesor de Drept,

George/Gheorghe Strat s-a specializat n Economie politic, materie prin care a fcut cunotin studenilor i doctoranzilor si cu cele mai importante aspecte legate de doctrinele i politicile economice existente din Antichitate pn n perioada pe care a trit-o. Fondator al revistei Libertatea i membru fondator al asociaiilor romne, Asociaia Romn pentru Progresul Social i Asociaia General a Economitilor din Romnia, prof. George/Gheorghe Strat a fost unul dintre cei mai apreciai profesori ai Academiei de Drept din Oradea, fiind decorat cu

mai multe ordine militare i civile. Dei dreptul universal, introdus la 16 decembrie 1918, era exclus femeilor, n perioada interbelic, i nu numai, femeile au jucat, prin aciunile ntreprinse, un rol important n viaa social, cultural i religioas. Capitolul nchinat Reuniunii Femeilor Romne, vine cel mai bine s explice importana femeii n viaa social i cultural a romnilor ordeni de dup 1918. Capitolul face referire la modul de formare al acestei instituii, la Statutul acesteia i la implicarea pe care societatea a avut-o n decursul existenei sale. Sufletul

acesteia, Veturia Candrea, a fost cea care a reuit s mobilizeze i alte personaliti sau instituii de cultur din Oradea pentru a contribui, prin balurile de binefacere, la

dezvoltarea unei societi mult ncercate de-a lungul timpului. Este momentul s amintim c ea a reuit s aduc la un loc ntreaga societate intelectual a judeului Bihor: profesori universitari, capete luminate ale bisericii ortodoxe i ale celei greco-catolice, oameni politici. Aa putem explica mai bine de ce aceast instituie a fost aleas pentru a fi tratat n aceast lucrare. Reuniunea Femeilor Romne a avut relaii de colaborare foarte strnse cu Academia de Drept din Oradea, Casa Naional a judeului Bihor, Primria Municipiului Oradea, Episcopia Ortodox i cea Greco-Catolic, cu ASTRA. n capitolul ASTRA-Oradea, nu ne-am propus s prezentm modul de funcionare al acesteia, ntreaga activitate desfurat la nivelul judeului Bihor ci, doar cteva aciuni n care ea s-a implicat. Motivul este unul simplu: cartea

anterioar- Rolul politic i cultural al lui George Sofronie la Oradea. Aspecte ale vieii culturale ordene 1926-1934 - a surprins o parte dintre aceste aspecte (mod de funcionare, statut, domenii de activitate etc.) n capitolul Casa Naional i ASTRA-despmntul Bihor. Capitolul are la baz fondul arhivistic ASTRA-desprmntul Bihor i articole aprute n Gazeta de Vest.

Poate cea mai grea parte a acestei munci n echip a fost cea legat de implicarea i studiul elevilor. nceptori n studiul documentelor de arhiv, stngaci de multe ori, acetia au reuit, n final, s aduc o raz de lumin n cultura ordean interbelic. De aceea, se impun mulumiri tuturor celor care s-au implicat: prof. Luminia Zamfira Vnturache, Rodica Mihaela Turca, Rodica Angela Sabu (profesori implicai direct n alctuirea capitolelor crii, dup cum se poate vedea), Natalia Grba (traducere n limba englez) i elevilor: Patricia Butca i Drago Glia din clasa a XI-a A, Vanessa

Lucrurile care ni se ntmpl nu sunt doar ca s ne fac fericii, uneori, iar alteori s ne ntristeze; ele sunt adevrate pietre de ncercare crora ntr-o anumit msur trebuie s le facem fa la un moment dat.

De aceea... i aceast lucrare a fost, la nceput, o piatr de ncercare pentru realizatorii ei, un nestemat la finalul su. i dac ne permitei, cei care v vei opri, atunci cnd vei avea puin timp liber, pentru a lectura aceste rnduri scrise de oameni care nu sunt nici scriitori, nici cercettori, ci doar ....simpli oameni, poate vei nelege mai bine sensul vieii i al mplinirii, rolul bine definit pe care-l avem fiecare pe acest Pmnt.

Do not ignore the important things in your life

and then regret it

The paper intitled Beams on the inter-war cultural of Oradea belongs to a group formed by teachers and pupils from Aurel Lazr Hischool in Oradea. The source of the paper is presented by the activities documents from Oradea and Cluj-

Napoca and by other general papers and specialized ones

which have been studied by the pupils and by the teachers who

wrote these papers between September 2008 and Octomber

2009.

The paper is part of a project agreed by the Townhall of

Oradea, to whom we are grateful. The project intitled National and European Cultural Interferences in the North-West of

Romania was carried on between 5 May and 5 November 2009, and was coordinated by prof.dr. Livia Ghiurcua. Looking back and analising our entire activity we, those

who dared to have a look on the activity of some personalities,

societies and organizations of portance in the cultural life of

our town, we understand that words seem to scarce when it

comes to those who sacrificed for the Country in order to leave

the Romanian nation an impressive cultural activity of great

national and European importance.

The activity carried on at the National Archives-Bihor

Office, The National ArchivesCluj Office, Gheorghe Sincai Library of Oradea or The Central University Library Cluj, drew us nearer to those who understood the importance of the

Romanian cultural activities for maintaining and developing

the Romanian nation in this Corner of Heaven despite the hardships they had to face.

At a time when nobody was expecting a wonder, a

miracle, this miracle was done on the Western lands of the

Romanian territory; in 1918 we joined forces and accomplished

what we historically call: The Great Romania.

Printed & Genuine works were studied on this debated

theme. But that great amount of information was taken from

the archives stock: stock of the Law Academy of Oradea, stock

of ASTRA Bihor division, stock of the Orthodox Church - Oradea, stock of the King Ferdinand I University - the Law

Academy of Oradea and from the Western Gazzette editorial, between 1930 1934. Today, when we celebrate 90

th of Romanian education

on these lands, we, the teachers and the pupils of Aurel Lazar Highschool, we make a bow before those who contributed to a

smaller or greater extent to the keeping of our identity.

The present book wanted (and we hope it succeeded to

do it) to the activity of some outstanding professors of the Law

Academy King Carol II (1780 1934) on the one hard, and on the others hand the importance of some cultural structures,

where, in one form or another, we can find the present of some

of its members performing a cultural, social or political activity

for the development of the cultural and Romanian civilisation.

The book is meant to complete prof.dr. Livia

Ghiucutas paper The Cultural and political role of George Sofronie in Oradea. Aspects of cultural life of Oradea between

196 1934 published at Primus Oradea launched in May 2009. The paper deals with other ones like: Cele Trei Crisuri Reunion, The Anti-Revisionist League and ASTRA - Bihor division. Therefore the fact that have already been dealt with in

the previously mentioned paper, wont be the subject of the present book.

The book is structured in two big parts which are then

divided into several chapters, that is: The role of contemporary fellows; Professor Lazar Iacob; Professor George/Gheorghe Striat, - who deals with some professors

from the King Carol II Law Acedemy; The Romanian Women

Reunion and ASTRA Oradea in the second part of the book. The respective chapters tried to render as well as they

could the didactic, pedagogical, social, political, etc. role that

these personalities and cultural institutions had in the time

between the two wars in Oradea, for the benefit of the

inhabitants of this town, with great implications at the country

level, at the national and European ones, too.

The first chapter of the book, The Role of Constantin Petrescu-Ercea at Oradea reveals the didactic and scientic activity of the professors on the one hard, and on the other one

his contribution as dean of this institution, because it would

unite with the similar faculty from Cluj in 1934. As professor

of Comercial Law, Constantin Petrescu-Ercea was also a

political personality, deputy of the Lieberal Party Duca wing, and man of letters, sensitive, impessed by Paris Town on which

he insisted in one of his lectures called The Nostalgia of Youth, delivered at the University of Cluj Sibiu in 1944. A good diplomat, he knew on many occasions to solve the

problems he confronted with. One of these was the problem of

subordination of the Law Academy of Oradea to the University

of Bucharest and then of the whole dispute around the fusion of

the institution in Oradea with King Ferdinand I University of

Cluj.

In the chapter dedicated to Tiberiu Mosoiu we paid

attention to his didactic and scientific activity and also to his

political one. Like George Sofronie, Tiberiu Mosoiu was

mayor of Oradea and governor of BNR. The son of general

Traian Mosoiu, Tiberiu tried to continue as faithfully as he

could the political activity of his father being a member of the

same political party The Liberal Party, Ghica group. The passion for history left a mark on his specialization

in The Roman Law. Thus a significant contribution was made by his father, a general of Romanian army, a fighter for

defending of the national ideals and of the Western border on

the occasion of the Conference in Paris (1919 1920). April 20

th, 1919 would forever bring to the memory of th citizens of

Oradea the efforts of his father to defend the Great Romania.

The chapter entitled George Sofronie as seen by his contemporaries completes the book dedicated to this man in May 2009. He mentions especially the ideas of this professor

from different conferences and published papers and which are

generally based on matters of International Law. A Pan European , George Sofronie was appreciated and respected by

his contemporary fellows. The Western Gazzette gave a special action on his professors and always tried to publish as

realistically as it could, the article about the scientific activity

of this professor being on his side for many times, including

the time when he faced major family problems (the shooting of

his wife). As a politician, president of the Temporary

Commission of Oradea, he was obliged to apply some radical

measures too, but above some malicious interpretations, prof.

George Sofronie remains a respected personality, appreciated

by his fellow citizens. He was malleable even with those ho

tried to deny his nationality and religion, considering this

speculations as simple words uttered by people who did not, or

did not want to, understand why these measures were

necessary, especially those he took as a mayor.

The chapter which refers to prof. Lazar Iacob deals with

his didactic, scientific and pedagogical activity and also with

the contribution he had for a year as president of the National

House. Like other professors of the Law Academy in Oradea,

Lazar Iacob, a professor of Church Law, was one of most

appreciated personalities of the institution, both inside it and in

the society of Oradea He was dean and deputy dean of the

Law Academy, representative in the University Senate in

Bucharest together with Constatin Petrescu-Ercea, director of

the Hostel and Canteen of the Law Students in Oradea and was

decorated, like other professors of the institution Constantin

Petrescu-Ercea or George Strat, by the Romanian Government.

In the chapter about prof. George/Gheorghe Strat, we

tried to reveal the most important aspects of his didactic and

scientific activity at the Law Academy in Oradea. As a

professor of law, George/Gheorghe Strat specialized in

Political Economy, through which he taught his students and

candidates aspects for a doctors degree the most important aspects of doctrines and political economies the Antiquity and

up to the period in which he lived.

Founder of the Freedom review and founder of the Romanian association The Romanian Association of the Economists of Romania, prof. George/Gheorghe Strat was one of the most appreciated professors of the Law Academy in

Oradea, thus he was decorated with several civil and military

orders.

Although the (niversal) intenational law, introduced on

December 16th

, 1928, excluded the women, in the time between

the wars, and not only, women played an important poart

through the actions they too in the social, cultural and religious

life. The chapter dedicated to The Romanian Women Reunion is ment to better explain the importance of women in the social and cultural life of Oradea after 1918. The chapter

refers to the actions this society took during its functioning.

Vetunia Candrea, the soulof this reunion was the one who succeeded to persuade other personalities and culture

institutions fom Oradea to contribute, through charity balls, to

the development of a society hardened in the course of times.

It is now the moment for us to remember that she

succeeded to bring together the whole intellectuals of the Bihor

county, professors, great minds Of the Orthodox Church and of

the Catholic-Gree one, political personalities. In this way we

can explain why this institution was chosen to e dealt with in

partnership relations with the Law Academy of Oradea, the

National House of Bihor, The Townhall of Oradea, the

Orthodox Church and the Catholic-Greek one and with

ASTRA.

In the chapter ASTRA Oradea we did not mean to present the way this institution functions or its whole activity in

Bihor, but only a few actions in which it was engaged. The

reason is a simple one the previous book The Political and Cultural Role of George Sofronie in Oradea. Aspects of the

cultural life of Oradea 1926-1934 dealt with a part of these aspects (the way it functioned, the rules, activity fields, etc.) in

the chapter The National House and ASTRA Bihor Division. The chapter is based on the archives of ASTRA Bihor division and on the articles which appeared in The Western Gazzette. Maybe the most difficult part of the wor in team was that which refers to the study of the archives

documents often clumsy in their work, they have finally

succeeded to bring a light on the cultural activity in oradea

between the wars. It is therefore that we thank all those who

contributed to this work: Teachers Luminia Zamfira Vnturache, Rodica Mihaela Turca, Rodica Angela Sabu (they worked to build the chapters of the book), Natalia

The things that happen to us are not only meant to make

us happier sometimes, or make us sad at other times, but they

are real touchstones which we have to face in time.

That is whythis book was also a touchstone, at the beginning, for those who wrote it, a precious stone in the end.

And f we are well-understood by those who will take time to

read these lines - when they can afford to -, lines written by

people who are not trained to write,, neither are they scientists,

but onlysimple people then you will understand better the meaning of life and of satisfaction, the well-defined role we all

have on Earth.
