The Miraculous Pitcher
Long, long ago, a good man and his wife lived in a little cottage on a hilltop. Their names were Philemon and Baucis. They were old and very poor, and they worked hard to earn their living, but they were happy all day long and they loved one another dearly.
They lived on their hilltop looking after their small garden and their beehives and tending their cow. They seldom had anything more to eat than bread and milk and vegetables, with sometimes a little honey from their beehives, or a few ripe pears or apples from the garden.
They were two of the kindest old people in the world, and would gladly have gone without their dinner any day rather than refuse a slice of bread or a cupful of milk to any hungry traveler who might stop at their cottage.
A beautiful village lay in the valley below the hilltop where the cottage of Philemon and Baucis stood. The valley, shaped like a bowl, was fertile with green meadows, gardens and orchards. But, sad to say, the people living in this pleasant fertile valley were selfish and hardhearted, with never a thought of pity or kindness for the friendless or needy.
These villagers taught their children to be just as unkind as they were. They kept large fierce dogs, and whenever unfortunate strangers appeared in the village, the dogs would rush out barking and snarling at them. The children, too, were encour-aged to run after them pelting them with stones and jeering at their shabby clothes.
What made it even worse was that if the strangers were rich people attended by servants, the villagers would be extra polite and would bow and scrape before them.

Urciorul fermecat
Demult, tare demult, un om de treabă locuia, împreună cu nevasta lui, într-o căsuţă pe un deal. Bărbatul se numea Filemon, iar pe femeie o chema Baucis. Erau bătrâni şi foarte săraci şi munceau din greu ca să-şi câştige traiul de zi cu zi, dar erau fericiţi cât era ziulica de lungă şi se iubeau tare mult unul pe celălalt.
Ei trăiau pe dealul acela ocupându-se de mica lor grădină şi de stupii de albine, având grijă totodată şi de vaca lor. Arareori se întâmpla să aibă altceva la masă decât pâine, lapte şi zarzavaturi, iar câteodată mai aveau şi puţină miere de la stupi sau câteva pere sau mere coapte din grădină.
Cei doi erau printre cei mai cumsecade bătrânei din lume şi oricând s-ar fi lipsit bucuroşi de bucatele lor decât să refuze o bucată de pâine sau o cană cu lapte orică-rui drumeţ înfometat care s-ar fi oprit la căsuţa lor.
În valea de la poalele dealului pe care se afla căsuţa lui Filemon şi a lui Baucis se întindea o frumuseţe de sat. Valea, adâncită întocmai ca o strachină, era mănoasă, cu păşuni verzi, grădini şi livezi. Dar, din păcate, oamenii care trăiau în această vale încântătoare şi fertilă erau egoişti şi răi la suflet, şi n-ar fi arătat niciodată milă sau bunăvoinţă faţă de cei lipsiţi de prieteni sau aflaţi la nevoie.
Sătenii îşi învăţau odraslele să fie la fel de rele ca şi ei. Aveau câini mari şi fioroşi şi, de câte ori apăreau prin sat pribegi nefericiţi, câinii le ieşeau degrabă în întâmpi-nare, lătrând şi mârâind la ei. Iar copiii, la rândul lor, erau îndemnaţi să alerge după străini şi să arunce cu pietre după ei, bătându-şi joc de straiele lor ponosite.Şi mai de neiertat era faptul că, dacă străinii cu pricina erau bogaţi însoţiţi de
slujitori, sătenii se întreceau cu bunăvoinţa şi se umileau peste măsură în faţa lor.

The elder of the two strangers was very tall and walked calmly along. He seemed not to have noticed the barking dogs or the screaming children.
When they reached the cottage, Philemon said, “We are poor folk and haven’t much to offer, but all we have is yours.”
The strangers sat down on the bench and the younger one dropped his staff on the grass. And then a strange thing happened. The staff seemed to get up by itself and, spreading its little pair of wings, half hopped and half flew to lean itself against the wall of the cottage.

Cel mai vârstnic dintre străini era foarte înalt şi păşea foarte liniştit. Părea să nu fi băgat de seamă lătrăturile câinilor sau zbieretele copiilor.
Când au ajuns la căsuţă, Filemon le-a spus:— Noi suntem săraci şi nu avem multe să vă oferim, dar tot ce avem este al vostru.Străinii se aşezară pe băncuţă şi cel mai tânăr îşi lăsă toiagul în iarbă. Atunci se
întâmplă ceva neobişnuit. Toiagul se ridică parcă cu de la sine putere şi, întinzându-şi aripioarele, ba zbură, ba ţopăi, până se sprijini de peretele casei.
